Some of the video production gear we’re using today would’ve been unthinkable only a few years ago. We look at the latest kit used in the video production industry and compare it to the tech we used over the past few decades. Computers, cameras, storage have all come so far an continued to improve year on year. We look at the RED Epic camera which shoots an 8k frame size and compare it against the old standard def frame sizes we used to shoot only a few years ago. Cameras have also come down in weight, we’re no longer bench pressing a Digi Beta camera every time we shoot something, the new Sony cameras weigh a fraction. Shooting aerials and landscapes used to involve hiring an expensive helicopter, pilot and camera operator, now we just throw up a drone and shoot away.
Computers have probably had the greatest improvement, we were struggling to play HD video only a few years ago now we’re rendering 8k footage and animation with no problems. The cards we add into our machines to play that video have changed massively, new video cards can drive a few monitors all displaying 4k footage. Obviously all this footage has got to go somewhere, storage is now huge and fast, saving hours in copying and save times. We’ve got some great kit in 2018, where are we headed next?
