Planning on undertaking any building or renovation work? Hold that thought, you may be sharing your home with another resident – the bat. If your property has any loose roof tiles, wall voids or damaged gable ends, it’s likely they may have set up their roost already. But bat habitats aren’t limited to buildings and roofs, they also like to roost in holes and cracks in trees. All UK bat species are legally protected under Schedule II of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017. This makes it illegal to disturb, harm or destroy an active roost. Bat surveys must only be carried out by qualified bat consultants, where they are trained and educated in how to disturb and handle bats safely.
