On April 9, 2012, facebook purchased instagram for $1 billion. The New York Times, on that same day, had a market capitalization of a little over 946 million, based on a $6.40 stock price. The fact that a 2-year-old startup with 12 employees could theoretically be valued higher—by Mark Zuckerberg, at least— than one of the world’s most venerable media companies, raises a lot of questions.
